Moroccan Inclusiveness

My experience of Morocco has been one of acceptance; Christians, Jews and Muslims living together in peace. The documentary film "They Were Promised the Sea" deals with the recent experience of Moroccan Jews moved to Israel. Someday I hope we can see the film. There is a sample here and info from the film maker."They Were Promised the Sea"

  1. I have been interested to read that so many Jews left Morocco for Israel. Did they want to leave or were they pressured?

    1. Perhaps a bit of both. I was in Ethiopia at the time that Israel recruited Ethiopian Jews to migrate and donor groups provided the means. So maybe encouragement and sweet deals for a population feeling vulnerable. The history of the Jews in Morocco is long and interesting. I understand they accompanied the Phoenicians on their arrival in Morocco in ancient times. The Jews have been an integral part of Moroccan culture since ancient times, and protected by various rulers. I would love to see this film!
